Concrete Services FAQ

  • Do I need a concrete slab before installing a Mammoth Metal Structure?

Not always—but it depends on the structure type.

For all of our structures, Mammoth Metal Structures can install on:

    • Gravel
    • Asphalt
    • Ground / Dirt Work
    • Concrete Slab

We strongly recommend going with a concrete slab for:

    • Proper anchoring
    • Structural stability
    • Moisture protection
    • Long-term durability

Most customers investing in any one of our structures choose concrete to protect that investment.

  • What concrete slab thickness is recommended for our structures?

    Typical recommendations based on use:

    • 4” slab → most common
    • 5”+ slab → customer preference / specific needs. Available for pricing upon request.

But thickness alone isn’t enough—we offer additional options for long-term performance.

    • Additional Options → 1' x 1' Column Post Footers, Side Walks, Ramps, Aprons, Driveways, Wire Mesh, Gravel, etc. Available for pricing upon request.
  • What base preparation is required before pouring a slab?

This is where most slab failures happen if done wrong.

    A proper install includes:

    • Proper leveling
    • Moisture/vapor barrier
    • Reinforcement (rebar)
    • Grading for drainage away from the building

    Skipping base prep leads to:

    • Cracking
    • Settling
    • Water pooling inside your building
  • Do Mammoth Metal Structures require footings or thickened slab edges?

Yes—many engineered buildings require thickened edges or perimeter support.

    Typical specs:

    • Thickened edges: 12”–24” deep (depending on specific county requirements, such as Frost Lines)
    • Reinforced perimeter for anchor load

    This is critical because:

    • The weight load transfers to the slab edges
    • Anchors rely on that depth for wind resistance

All of Mammoth Structures come with a minimum footer size of 14" Deep x 18" Wide, following our Engineer Designed Plans.

  • Can a metal building be anchored to an existing slab?

Yes—but it must meet structural requirements.

    We check:

    • Thickness (usually 4” minimum, often more)
    • Condition (no major cracks or shifting)
    • Edge support strength
    • Anchor compatibility

If the slab isn’t adequate, anchoring can fail under stress—especially in high winds.

  • How do you determine the correct slab size for my building?

Your slab should match or slightly exceed your building footprint.

    Examples:

    • 20x20 garage → 20x20 (Flush Mount Kit Required) or 20' 7" x 20' 7" Monolithic Style slab
    • 24x30 shop → 24x30 (Flush Mount Kit Required) or 24' 7" x 30' 7" Monolithic Style slab

    The Differences:

    • A Flush Mount Kit is an alternative method to anchor the building away from the outer edge of the concrete to prevent a potential "blow out."
    • A Monolithic Style slab is made with an extra 3.5" perimeter to allow for anchoring to take place directly through the main base rail and still be away from the outer edge of the concrete preventing a potential "blow out." A Monolithic Style is also recommended because the extra lip is usually made at a slightly lower level then the main pad. This allows for the sheet metal to overlap slightly on the bottom and taking a layer to seal off the bottom of the building from any potential water intrusion.

Depending on client requests/ needs, we also account for selected options such as:

    • Door openings (garage doors need proper clearance)
    • Water runoff
    • Walkways or apron space
    • Ramps
  • Do I need anchor bolts installed before my building is delivered?

    No.

With Mammoth Metal Structures, we handle all anchoring during the actual building installation.

    Suggestions:

    • Although, understandable at times, this is one of the many reasons that we would rather handle the foundation work as well to ensure that everything is done properly and as needed. Rather then having to make adjustments to the building specifications due to an mis-poured and/ or improperly formed up concrete foundation done by another contractor.
  • How long should I wait before installing a metal building on new concrete?

    • 28 days → full cure strength

We coordinate install lead times to consider and account for the time needed to fully cure a concrete foundation without delaying your project. All lead times begin at the time site photos are submitted, discussed with clients, and approved by our internal processing team.

  • Is a concrete slab better than gravel for a carport or RV cover?

    It depends on your goals.

    Gravel pros:

    • Lower upfront cost
    • Faster install

    Concrete pros:

    • Cleaner look
    • Better drainage control
    • No rutting or shifting
    • Easier maintenance
    • Stronger anchoring

For long-term use, especially for RVs or vehicles, concrete is typically the better investment.

  • What concrete features should I consider for a garage or workshop?

    Smart features most people overlook:

    • Control joints - reduces cracking (standard on all Mammoth provided concrete slabs)
    • Broom finish - slip resistance (recommended for exterior slabs/ sidewalks and driveways)
    • Trowel finish - smooth finish (recommended for interior slabs, such as flooring base for enclosed garage)
    • Thickened areas for lifts (4" thick is sufficient, but recommended 6" thickness for longevity)
    • Apron extension at garage doors
    • Wire mesh - adds support and strength for longevity.

These decisions are much better to consider before the pour than after.

  • Do you offer concrete services in the same areas Mammoth Metal Structures serves?

Yes—we coordinate concrete work based on Mammoth Metal Structures service regions, which typically include:

    • North Carolina
    • South Carolina
    • Georgia
    • Tennessee
    • Virginia
    • West Virginia
    • Surrounding Southeast markets

We align scheduling so your slab is scheduled within a reasonable amount of time after ordering (considering any required permits), and once concrete is completed then the lead time for the building's installation begins.

  • What’s the biggest mistake people make with concrete for metal buildings?

Trying to save money on the slab.

The building is only as good as what it sits on:

    • Poor base prep = shifting structure
    • Incorrect thickness = cracking under load
    • Bad anchoring = failure in storms

The slab is the foundation of your entire investment—cutting corners here costs more later.

    • Although, understandable at times, this is one of the many reasons that we would rather handle the foundation work as well to ensure that everything is done properly and as needed. Rather then having to make adjustments to the building specifications due to an mis-poured and/ or improperly formed up concrete foundation done by another contractor.
